Genesis Study Questions

Based on Text of Genesis and Paradise to Prison (Davis)

 

Chapter 1

1. Who is the author of Genesis? Look up and write out two verses that support your answer.

 

Chapter 2

1. On page 40 Davis speaks of creation ex nihilo. Use other sources, if necessary, to help you explain what this means. Does it accurately describe God's creative work in Genesis 1?

2. Briefly explain the gap theory. If the arguments to support this theory are faulty as Davis and most other biblical scholars suggest, why do you think people still adhere to it?

 

Chapter 3

1. Make a side-by-side chart comparing the day-age theory to the literal day theory. Also list proponents of the theories and supporting Scriptures.

 

Chapter 4

1. What phenomena might be explained by the canopy theory?

2. Make a chart listing the creative work of God during each of the 6 days of creation. Put days 1-3 on the left side and days 4-6 on the right.

3. What do you think is the major difference between Genesis 1 and Enuma Elish?

 

Chapter 5

1. How does the biblical account itself refute the concept of theistic evolution? Why do you think the theory of theistic evolution was proposed?

2.What responsibilities did God give to the first man?

 

Chapter 6

1. Describe the serpent's (Satan's) method of temptation, step by step.

2. List the effects of the fall on the human race, the serpent, women, and men.

 

Chapter 7

1. Explain the meaning of Genesis 4:7.

2. How did God deal with Cain's murder of his brother? Why do you think God spared his life?

3. Contrast the descendants of Cain and Seth in chapters 4 and 5.

 

Chapter 8

1. List the various views of the "sons of God" in Genesis 6:2.

2. Look up and write the definition of antediluvian.

3. Explain in what sense God "repented" in Genesis 6:6.

 

Chapter 9

1. Why have some scholars argued that the Flood was local? How would you refute this theory?

2. Does Genesis 9:6 mean that capital punishment is proper today? Explain.

3. In what ways does the Gilgamesh Epic differ from the Genesis account of the Flood?

 

Chapter 10

1. What is the purpose of the genealogical lists in Genesis 10?

2. What was wrong with building the tower of Babel?

 

Chapter 11

1. Draw a map showing the travels of Abraham in Genesis 12-14.

2. What did God promise Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3 (the Abrahamic Covenant)?

 

Chapter 12

1. How is the Abrahamic covenant restated and amplified in Genesis 15 and 17?

2. Contrast Abraham's faith in Genesis 15 with his failure in chapter 16. How can we account for his failure?

 

Chapter 13

1. Who visited Abraham and Sarah in Genesis 18?

2. How would you assess Lot's spiritual condition from what is said about him in Genesis? How does this fit with 2 Peter 2:7-8?

 

Chapter 14

1. Compare Abraham's actions in Genesis 20 with those in Genesis 12:10-20? What happened in both instances? What does this tell us about both Abraham and Sarah?

2. How does Genesis 22 highlight the faith of Abraham? How had he changed through the years? (Consider Genesis 16, Genesis 20, and Hebrews 11:17-19.)

 

Chapter 15

1. How does Genesis 25:23 explain Jacob's early life? Does this mean God approved of his efforts to gain Isaac's blessing?

2. In what sense did all the characters-Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, and Esau-demonstrate sinful attitudes?

 

Chapter 16

1. Read Genesis 28:10-22. What is the significance of this event for Jacob and God's plan? Cite other verses in Genesis in your answer.

2. Make a chart of Jacob's family, showing his wives and their respective children.

 

Chapter 17

1. List at least five things you learn about Joseph's character from Genesis 37-45.

2. Briefly summarize Joseph's dealings with his brothers in chapters 42-44. Why did he do the things he did?

 

Chapter 18

1. How did Jacob's blessing of Ephraim and Manasseh demonstrate his own spiritual growth?

2. Summarize the meaning of Jacob's blessing on each of his sons in chapter 49. You may want to do this in the form of a chart.
