Changes, changes! I was recently appointed managing editor of the Creation Research Society Quarterly. This scholarly journal presents the latest research from leading scientists who take the Bible seriously and literally as the Word of God. For more information on this publication, visit the Creation Research Society web page at: www.creationresearch.org

Another change for me is that I am no longer editing the International Sunday School Lessons (see Sunday School and Bible Teaching page).

I served as the editor of Reinventing Jesus, a book that addresses many of the attacks against Christianity from radical critics that are featured so prominently in both the book and the upcoming movie, The Da Vinci Code. Visit the book’s web site at: www.reinventingjesus.info/

The Gospel Herald and the Sunday School Times has published an article I wrote on the lovely Austrian castle that now houses a Christian ministry. It appears in the Spring 2006 issue of the magazine and is entitled “Schloss Klaus—A Testimony of Faith.”

One book I worked on as editor is David Hesselgrave’s Paradigms in Conflict (Kregel). I give it my highest recommendation as essential reading for church and missionary leaders.

Ukraine Report (2002)

We arrived at Dnepropetrovsk airport on May 24. We were met there and taken by van to Zaporozhye, about a 90-minute drive across the flat farmlands of eastern Ukraine. Zaporozhye is an industrial city of almost a million people. It is filled with crumbling apartment buildings and shops. We unpacked at the apartment where we would stay for two weeks. The accommodations were adequate, although we had no hot water.

My class at Zaporozhye Bible College began on Monday. My students were first-year Christian education students, 24 women and one man. They displayed an eagerness to learn and also had a wonderful sense of humor. While teaching the Book of Genesis for five hours a day was demanding and tiring, I can honestly say it was also fun. The students asked many questions, and they especially appreciated the fact that many American Christians were praying for them. On the last day of class, the students presented me with a decorative Ukrainian spoon, and they all stood and sang a song to me.

Winona meanwhile was helping out in various ways at the school. Her primary responsibility was helping two graduates of the Bible college with their English. These two men, Sergei and Vitaly, are planning on pursuing Master's degrees at English-language seminaries and then returning to teach at Zaporozhye Bible College.

Both Sundays we were in Ukraine we visited churches. The first Sunday we went to a small church in the center of the city. My sermon there was one of four that morning. It was a delight to worship with this congregation and to speak through an interpreter for the first time. We visited a large Baptist church the next week, which was communion Sunday. Later, Winona gave an object lesson in another church's Sunday school. Still later in the afternoon, I preached at an English service held at the school.

We are grateful for the opportunity we had to serve at Zaporozhye Bible College and for the gifts and prayers that made it possible. Not only were we able to contribute to this vital ministry of training Ukrainian teachers, but we also gained a new perspective on Christ's church in the world. From now on when we think of Ukraine, we will think of the new friends we have there and of the need to uphold them in prayer.

Austria Report (2002)

On our return trip from Ukraine, we spent several days in Austria. We enjoyed very much this twentieth anniversary vacation. We took a quick tour of Vienna and then traveled by train west to the small town of Klaus. There we stayed in a renovated castle and fortress, which now serves as a Christian retreat and a Torchbearers' Bible school. While staying at Schloss Klaus, we took a day trip to the beautiful mountainside/lakeside town of Hallstatt.
